The Appalachian State University softball team hit two home runs on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as Georgia Southern squeaked out a 4-3, sweeping the three-game Southern Conference weekend series.
The Mountaineers (13-22 overall; 3-8 SoCon) rallied from a 2-0 deficit thanks to a solo home run by Cynthia Gomez, a double by Sarah Warnock, and a sacrifice fly by Lindsay Loudermilk in the fourth inning.
But the Eagles (27-11, 11-1 SoCon) regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Taylor Rogers and Emily Snider, who belted a two-ruj led off the inning with bunt singles. Rogers eventually scored the go ahead run on a Kourtny Thomas single through the right side of the infield. A Kaitlyn Johnson single up the middle to score Snider, making it 4-2.
Pepper Butler (Delray Beach, Fla./Boca Raton Community) homered in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the lead to one at 4-3. But winning pitcher Sarah Purvis kept the Apps in check from there.
Purvis went the distance and gave up three earned runs on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Alissa Schoelkopf (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) pitched a complete game for the Mountaineers, allowing four runs on nine hits and struck out six and suffered the loss.
The Black and Gold travels to East Tennessee State for a single game at 5 p.m.
