WHS Girls Dominate Frosh/Soph Meet PDF Print

The Watauga High girls' freshman/sophomore track team racked up 15 top-five finishes and won six events in a freshman/sophomore meet at St. Stephens on



The girls nosed out Hickory 129-124.5. Freedom and St. Stephens both finished a distant third with 66 points. The WHS boys finished fifth with 77 points. The WHS boys won four events and posted nine top-five finishes. South Caldwell won the boys' meet with 110 points.


Savanna Randle paced the girls by winning two events. She won the girls' 100-meter dash in 13 seconds and the 200 in 26.9. Brynne Gould won the girls' 400 (1:05.5) and finished fifth in the 200 (28.7). Ellie Sloboda won the girls' 800 in 2:44; WHS also won the 4x800 (12:23.5) and the 4x400 (4:41.7) relays.


Sarah Arnette finished second in the girls' high jump (5-0), Megan Smith finished second in the 400 (1:07.5), Jesse Wangler finished second in the 3,200 (14:13), Maddie Swisher finished second in the 300 hurdles (55.3); and WHS finished second in the 4x100 relay (57.6).


Tayler McCune finished third in the triple jump (28.6), Swisher finished third in the 100 hurdles (28.2), and Hallie McDaniel finished fifth in the 100 (13.6).


For the WHS boys, Elijah Temple led the way with three top-five finishes. He won the boys' high jump with an effort of 5-6, he won the 100 in 11.1 seconds, and he finished third in the 200 in 23.9 seconds.


Matthew Hellenbrand won the boys' 800 (2:09.2) and Grant Pilkington won the 3,200 (11:11.4). Dakota Finger finished second in the shot put (38-3) and WHS finished second in the 4x400 (4:15.4) and the 4x800 (9:35.4) relays. Sam Williams was fourth in the 1,600 (5:22.5).


The WHS track teams travel to Ashe County for a meet next Wednesday, April 9.
