The Appalachian State University softball team played long ball on Wednesday and defeated North Carolina Central 7-5 at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.

Pepper Butler, Cara Parker and Alicia Van Winkle all homered in the win.

Trailing 4-2, Parker's two out, three-run blast to deep center field in the fifth inning gave ASU a 5-4 lead. But NCCU tied it up in the sixth on an Emerie Germ single that scored Markel Wylie.

But Van Winkle (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) saved the day with a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth that put the Mountaineers on top for good. It was also Van Winkle's first career home run.

Shivaun Landeros (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) got the win in relief. She gave up a run on five hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings improving her record to 8-9 on the year.

The Mountaineers will host Georgia Southern for a three-game series this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.; Sunday's finale begins at 1 p.m.
