The Gate City FC in Greensboro, N.C., announced Thursday that it has acquired former Watauga standout soccer player Jennings Rex from Major

League's Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC. Further details of the deal were not released per Club policy.


Rex, (6-1, 155), was a four-year standout midfielder for the University of Charlotte in college. He was named second team freshmen All-American and earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors. He led the 49ers with 11 goals his senior year. Those 11 goals were the most goals scored by a Charlotte player since Chris Salvaggione scored 15 goals in 2008. Rex recorded also four multiple goal games.


The Sounders selected Rex in the fourth round of the Supplemental Draft in January, 2014. Rex recently started for the Sounders as they went on to win 1-0 over the Portland Timbers, before coming to Gate City FC.


At Watauga High, Rex earned All-Conference and All-Region honors as a junior and a senior..Broke several schools records including goals in a single season (40), hat tricks in a single season (5), goals in a single game (7), and points in a single season (98). Rex is also the younger brother of former 49ers and WHS women's soccer standout Ashley Rex.
