Lenoir-Rhyne University's Ivan Vieitez has been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher Of The Week, league officials announced this



Vieitez, a junior from Miami, Fla., threw a four-hit shutout over Newberry last Saturday in the nightcap of a doubleheader split on the road. Vieitez struck out seven batters as well in the 3-0 win against the Wolves.


Vieitez has won three straight games, all against league opponents, and has allowed just one earned run during that span.


Vieitez has a 3-4 record with a 3.67 earned run average, two complete games and 28 strikeouts so far this season.


Vieitez, a starting outfielder as well, was named the SAC Baseball Player Of The Week last Tuesday.


Vieitez, a first-team all-league honoree in 2013, currently leads the squad in batting average (.398), runs scored (18), total bases (54), slugging percentage (.524) and on-base percentage (.480).


Tusculum's Trey Drewery was named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player Of The Week today as well.


Lenoir-Rhyne (10-26, 6-16) returns to action this Friday against Anderson in Anderson, S.C., in a South Atlantic Conference game beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (10-26) earned a 6-4 victory over King (12-25-1) Tuesday afternoon on the road.


L-R sophomore shortstop Matthew De La Rosa (Austin, Texas) finished with two hits and two runs batted in including the game-winning, RBI triple in the eighth inning which broke a 4-4 tie.


L-R senior Austen Gunnels (Hitchcock, Texas) (1-1) earned his first win of the season while sophomore Nick Flachofsky (Pfafftown, N.C.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the year.


King rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the contest after plating four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.


Landon Weitekamp (Farmersville, Ill.) came through with the big hit in the frame with a two-run double to tie the score for the Tornado.


Lenoir-Rhyne junior catcher Read Brown (Indian Trail, N.C.) and senior second baseman Nate Martin (Lansing, N.Y.) each finished with a pair of hits and a run batted in as well.


Eric Stapleton (Defiance, Ohio) fell to 1-3 on the year for the Tornado, who suffered its seven consecutive setback.


Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday against Anderson in Anderson, S.C. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. King faces Carson-Newman at Smokies Park in Kodak, Tenn., tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.


L-R Men's Golf Takes 10th Place At UNC Pembroke Classic


The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Golf Team finished 10th out of 16 teams at the UNCP/Campbell Oil/Sunoco Classic which concluded with the third and final round Tuesday at the River Landing Country Club.


L-R shot a 929 (+65) on the par-72, 6,795-yard course while Newberry won with an 882 (+18) after 54 holes of play.


Newberry also had the top three golfers in the tournament including Ryan Wilkinson, the individual champion with a one-over 217.


L-R was led by senior John White (Dudley Shoals, N.C.), who tied for 18th overall with a 227 (+11).


The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Golf Team next competes in the Tennessee River Rumble on April 7 and 8 in Knoxville, Tenn.
