As the old saying goes, "there's a first time for everything." Well it happened last night. The South Caldwell High girls' soccer team knocked off Watauga 1-0 Tuesday night in a Northwestern 3A-4A Conference game in Sawmills, N.C.
It was also a triple whammy for the Pioneers. WHS (8-1-2 overall; 4-1 NW3A-4A) suffered its first loss of the year, the
loss also knocked WHS out of first place, and the Spartans defeated the Pioneers for the first time in girls' soccer since the teams became conference rivals in the 2001-02 season.
Indee Swanson scored the game's only goal in the first ten minutes of the match and the Spartans made it stand up.
"We just didn't come ready to play," said WHS coach Brittany Bolick. "We were dangerous, but we just couldn't finish."
The loss leaves WHS a game behind St. Stephens (5-0 NW3A-4A) for first place. The Indians blanked Fred T. Foard 3-0 Tuesday night. The Pioneers travel to St. Stephens Thursday night.
The WHS junior varsity team defeated South Caldwell 4-1 Tuesday night. Maddie Warren, Gracee Kleeberger, Megan Gottfried, and Finley Collins scored for the Pioneers.
