The Appalachian State University softball team knocked off North Carolina Central 5-1 onWednesday in Durham, N.C. The Mountaineers (12-16) opened up a 3-0 lead and coasted home thanks to the brilliant pitching of Alissa Schoelkopf and Sydney Laws.

Schoelkopf went 2.2 innings and gave up an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts; Laws finished up and scattered three hits with three strikeouts to close things out.

Cara Parker gave ASU all the offense it needed with a two-run shot in the top of the first inning. A run-scoring single by Pepper Butler in the second inning gave the Apps a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles (4-20) scored their only run of the game thanks to an error in the third inning. Leading 3-1, Ashley Best closed out the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the seventh.

The Mountaineers, who have won three of their last four games, travel to Birmingham, AL., for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Samford on Saturday. They wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday.
