After splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, the Appalachian State University softball team upended Western Carolina 7-4 in the series finale on Sunday.

The Mountaineers (11-16 overall, 3-2 Southern Conference) tied a season high by pounding out 12 hits. And Ashley Best of the Mountaineers led the charge with a pair of home runs.

Best (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) led off the second inning with her first career home run to dead center field. Cynthia Gomez (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) and Cara Parker (Lake Park, Ga./Lowndes) each had a run-scoring doubled in the inning as the Mountaineers opened up a 4-2 lead.

The Mountaineers extended their lead with two more runs in the third. Best highlighted the frame with her second home run of the game and her second of the season.

WCU (13-18; 3-3) chipped away with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Kara Salvo. That made it, 6-3, but the Black and Gold added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Parker. Dani Heichen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter), who scored on the play, had two more stolen bases on the day; she's 12-for-12 on the year.

Sydney Laws (Brownwood, Texas/Brownwood) got the start and went 4.2 innings. She also won her third straight game. She gave up two earned runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. Shivaun Landeros (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) earned her second save of the season. She went 2.1 innings allowing two hits and striking out three.

The Mountaineers travel to North Carolina Central for a single Wednesday at 6 p.m. Then it's off to Birmingham, AL., to play Samford Saturday and Sunday.
