The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (7-23, 4-13) opened a South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a 9-6 win over Carson-Newman (15-15, 8-11) Friday night at Bears Field.




L-R senior outfielder Brandon Walker (Otisville, N.Y.) led the way with three hits and four runs batted in as the Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and held on for the victory.


The Eagles cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth inning on Eric Jurjevic's (New Carlisle, Ind.) two-run double but the Bears stayed ahead the rest of the way. Jurjevic finished with a team-high three RBI in the losing effort.


Lenoir-Rhyne responded with a three-run sixth inning capped off by Walker's two-run triple in the victory.


L-R junior second baseman Brantley Rumford (Rock Hill, S.C.) and junior outfielder Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) added two runs batted in each as the Bears finished with 13 hits in the win.


On the mound, junior Jeremy Coburn (Louisburg, N.C.) (3-4) pitched into the seventh inning while striking out 10 batters en route to the win for the Bears. L-R junior Nick Flachofsky (Pfafftown, N.C.) earned his first save of the year.


For Carson-Newman, Dustin Dunagan (Winder, Ga.) fell to 2-3 on the season after suffering the loss.


Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman play a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader in wrapping up the league series on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., at Bears Field.
