The Watuaga High girls' soccer team knocked off Freedom 1-0 in its Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener Thursday night. And the Pioneers (5-0-2 overall; 1-0 NW3A/4A) also registered their sixth shutout of the season. The Pioneers have only given up one goal all year---in a 2-1 win against Forbush on March 11.
Tristin Derrick scored the game's only goal at the 37-minute mark of the first half. Abby Carson picked up the assist. The Pioneers return home to play Hibriten this evening.
The WHS junior varsity team defeated Freedom 3-0 Thursday night. Amanda Lubkemann in the 47th minute, Megan Gottfried in the 52nd meeting, and Sara Patton in the 69th minute scored for the Pioneers.

WHS GOLFER FINISH FIFTH IN NW3A/4A OPENER
The Watauga High boys' golf team turned in a fifth-place finish in Thursday's Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener at the Catawba Springs Golf Facility at Lake Hickory.
The Pioneers fired a 335 and finished 17 shots off the lead. St. Stephens paced the field with a 318.
Austin Russell of the Indians and Austin Harrill of Hickory were the leading medalists as each man fired a four-over par, 76.
Austin Graham and Austin Northern paced the Pioneers with an eight over par, 80. They finished only four shots off the lead. Rory McNeil of the Pioneers had an 86; Troy McNeil had an 89.
The Pioneers travel to Orchard Hills Golf Course in Granite Falls, N.C., Monday for a NW3A/4A Conference meet. South Caldwell will be the host school.

WHS TENNIS DROPS PANTHERS, 8-1
The Watuaga High boys' tennis team knocked off Hibriten 8-1 in its Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener Thursday afternoon at the WHS Tennis Courts.
The Pioneers took control by sweep singles play. Landon Taylor and Dristen Trate set the tone with a pair of straight set victories at No.1 and No.2 singles.
Taylor defeated Levy Young of the Panthers, 6-4, 6-3; Trate knocked off Isaac Tuttle, 6-1, 6-1. And it was all WHS (3-2 overall; 1-0 NW3A/4A) from that point on.
The Pioneers only lost three games between No.3 and No.6 singles to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The Pioneers entertain Patton on Tuesday.

DEMONS SPOIL WHS' SEASON OPENER
The Watauga High girls' lacrosse team finally got its 2014 season underway on Thursday. The Pioneers (0-1) dropped a 13-1 decision in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Junior Ellie Slobada scored WHS' only goal in the second half. Sophomore Katelyn Nguyen picked up an assist; sophomore goaltender Meghan Bisignani had 5 saves.
The Pioneers travel to Pfafftown-Reagan next Tuesday.
