Spring Practice Report — March 19 PDF Print

Appalachian State University football returned outside for the first time in two weeks when it held a two-hour practice at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Wednesday

afternoon.

Wednesday's pleasant weather in the High Country (50 degrees and sunny) allowed Appalachian State to practice outdoors for the first time since Wednesday, March 5. The Mountaineers had 12 days off for spring break and were forced to hold their first post-break practice in the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility on Monday due to wintry weather conditions.

Wednesday's practice was conducted in full pads and unlike Monday, when the squad was a bit sluggish following the long break, Wednesday featured the same ultra-fast tempo throughout that highlighted the initial week of workouts prior to spring break.

The final period of Wednesday's practice featured several minutes of various 11-on-11 situations, culminating with the offense and defense squaring off on third-and-goal plays from the three yard line. Appalachian's defense more than held its own with its backs against the wall by turning the offense away a number of times, highlighted by pass breakups in the end zone by linebacker John Law and defensive back Nic Shriner. However, the offense got its revenge on the final play of the day when Taylor Lamb found tight end Jacob McCann for a three-yard touchdown pass.

2010 Southern Conference Player of the Year and Walter Payton Award finalist DeAndre Presley was a special guest at Wednesday's practice. Presley made the short drive to Boone from Charlotte, where he lives as a member of the Carolina Panthers.

Wednesday's practice was the sixth of 15 allowed by the NCAA during the spring season. Appalachian State wraps up spring practice on Friday, April 4 when it hosts its spring game at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at The Rock.
