It's WHS' third loss by the ten-run rule this season.
"This team has so much potential," Kostis said. "But we just weren't ready to play today. This is an aggressive group. They always play hard, but today I felt we just gave up. It's frustrating."
The Pioneers only made five hits. Elizabeth Dollar was 1-3 with a run scored; Shelby Winebarger drove in WHS' only run with a double in the top of the first inning.
But the Patriots responded and took the lead by pushing a pair of runs across in the second; they increased their lead to 3-1 with a run in the third.
The Pioneers will play their home opener against Hibriten Friday night.

SOUTH MECK DOWNS WHS IN BOYS' LACROSSE
The Watauga High boys' lacrosse team lost to South Mecklenburg 16-2 Wednesday night at Leigh Wallace Memorial Field.
Dylan Arbogast and Canyon Mueller scored for the Pioneers (0-3).
"We've played some very good teams to start the season," said WHS senior Tyler Valet, who will be our guest on the dugout show before Friday night's baseball game between the Pioneers and Hibriten. "We lost a lot of good players from last season, especially Nick (Williams) and Dominick (Hamilton), but we just have to keep working hard. We have our pride, and we'll be all right."
The Pioneers, who won the District 9 title last spring, open league play at home against Hickory Friday night.
