The Appalachian State University softball team earned a split with Chattanooga in the Southern Conference opener for both teams on Saturday. The Mountaineers also saw their lengthy home-field
winning streak come to an end as well.
The Mountaineers won the opener, 4-1, and extended their home winning streak to 21 games. But the Mocs tripped up the Apps by that same 4-1 score to end the streak in game two.
In game one, Shivaun Landeros picked up her sixth win of the year as she went the distance and held Chattanooga to just two hits. The Mountaineers (9-15 overall; 1-1 SoCon) also took advantage of four Chattanooga errors.
Cynthia Gomez (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) gave the Apps all the runs they really needed with a two-out single in the third. That gave ASU a 2-0 lead.
The Mocs (14-12; 1-1) cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth inning. Sarah Beth Roberts doubled in Criket Blanco to make it, 2-1. But a sloppy defensive effort by the Mocs handed Appalachian a pair of unearned runs that put the contest out of reach.
In the second game, Sara Warnock belted her second hole run of the year in the third inning that gave App State an early 1-0 lead. But Chattanooga responded with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Tyler Templet drove in the first run with a sacrifice bunt that tied the game; Amanda Ross drove in the second run with a ground ball to second base.
Chattanooga put the game away thanks to a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Kaiti Dutton homered and Alyssa Taylor had an RBI double in the frame.
Sydney Laws suffered the loss in game two. Laws (2-5) went 5.2 innings and allowed just three hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Alissa Schoelkopf (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) was on the mound when the Mocs picked up their insurance runs on the seventh.
Due to rain in the forecast, the game time for Sunday's series finale against Chattanooga has been moved up to 11 a.m. from the previous game time of 1 p.m.
