The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (20-5, 2-0) opened South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday by sweeping Anderson (20-6, 0-2), 6-5 and 12-1, at Smethers Field. With the sweep, the Bears increased
their winning streak to five games.
Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 6, Anderson 5 (eight innings)
L-R scored twice in the seventh inning to force extra frames before winning the contest in the eighth on senior shortstop Jody Mizelle's (Colerain, N.C.) run-scoring double.
Mizelle added a solo home run to lead off the game and Bears survived a four-run sixth inning by the Trojans en route to the victory.
L-R freshman first baseman Sydney Landreth (Disputanta, Va.) led the way offensively with four hits while sophomore Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) (9-3) earned the victory in relief. Anderson's Katelynn Howser (Woodstock, Ga.) fell to 8-2 on the year after suffering the loss.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 12, Anderson 1 (five innings)
Lenoir-Rhyne scored early and often in run-ruling Anderson and completing the season sweep. The Bears took control with a six-run first inning highlighted by senior outfielder Brittany Coursen's (Virginia Beach, Va.) two-run double.
Coursen added two solo home runs and finished with four runs batted in to lead the Bears. Mizelle tallied three hits and two RBI as well as the Bears finished with 15 hits in the contest.
On the mound, Hoskins (10-3) earned the win while the Trojans' Lauren Rudesheim (Columbus, Ga.) (9-3) suffered the setback. Anderson's Courtney Czentnar (Lawrenceville, Ga.) hit a solo home run despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Newberry in a league doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Anderson plays Newberry in a doubleheader on the road Wednesday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Lenoir-Rhyne Salvages Split With Brevard
The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (6-21, 3-13) split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Brevard (11-14, 6-11) Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados won the first game, 6-1, before the Bears won nightcap by a 3-2 score.
Game One - Brevard 6, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
The Tornados' Zach Joyce (Walkertown, N.C.) (2-2) earned the complete game victory, allowing just one run while striking out nine batters.
Offensively, Hunter Donaldson (Edneyville, N.C.) led the way for Brevard after totaling three hits and three runs batted in including a two-run double in the seventh inning to break the contest open.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman outfielder Chase Hathcock (Rockwell, N.C.) drove in the Bears' only run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning while junior Jeremy Coburn (Louisburg, N.C.) (2-4) took the loss on the mound.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Brevard 2 (seven innings)
L-R junior Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) (1-4) earned his first victory of the season, going the distance and allowing just two unearned runs in addition to seven strikeouts as the Bears salvaged the split.
The Bears also rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the win which included senior outfielder Brandon Walker's (Otisville, N.Y.) game-winning, two-run double in the sixth inning. Brevard's J.D. Chaplain (Black Mountain, N.C.) fell to 1-3 on the year after suffering the setback.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Gaffney, S.C., to take on Limestone on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Brevard hosts Young Harris on Tuesday starting at 3:00 p.m.
The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams opened the 2014 outdoor season at the Coastal Carolina Invitational which concluded Saturday at Doug Shaw Stadium.
L-R redshirt freshman Zach Millsaps (Statesville, N.C.) broke the school record in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:33 while senior Aaron Nelson (Mayodan, N.C.) set a new school mark in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:02).
In addition, junior Latham York (Huntersville, N.C.) established a new program mark in the men's hammer throw (135'7") while freshman Domonique Jones (Greensboro, Ga.) set a school record in the women's discus throw (118'11") for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Charles Koontz (Flemington, N.J.) had two of the best finishes for the Bears at the meet, finishing seventh in the men's 800-meter run (2:02) and eighth in the men's 1,500-meter run (4:09).
Meanwhile, L-R sophomore Kevin Baxter's (Columbia, S.C.) bid to earn All-American honors for the second straight year fell short at the 2014 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships this past weekend at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Baxter finished 10th in the preliminaries of the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.02 seconds.
The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams will next host the PowerSox Invitational on Saturday, March 22, at the Irwin Belk Track.
