With a tough defense and long-range shooting, the Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute Cobras Men’s Basketball team defeated Herkimer County (N.Y.) Community College 82-65 in the opening

round of the NJCAA Division III National Championships Thursday in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y.



CCC&TI (28-6) behind a strong performance by freshman Lawrence Jackson, who had a game-high 30 points, advanced to the national semifinals Friday night at 5 p.m. against Eastfield College from Mesquite, TX.


Jackson was 5 of 10 from 3-point range, and he hauled in 12 rebounds. TJ Wilson of the Cobras had 14 points, 10 rebounds, freshman Justin Parham had 12 points, and sophomore Robert Harvey finished up with 10 points.


The Cobras also shot nearly 40 % from 3-point range, which includes a 60 % clip in the second half. And the Cobras, thanks to a smothering defense, outscored Herkimer 44-32 in the second half.


The winner of Friday’s matchup will advance to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Finals, which will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday.
