ASU Drops Two at Chanticleer Challenge PDF Print

The Appalachian State University softball team suffered a double whammy on Sunday at the Chanticleer Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Appalachian State (7-15) lost to Bryant 6-0 in game one, and to Coastal Carolina 8-0 in six innings in game two.

 

In game one, a two0-run triple by Haylee Haas gave the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Bulldogs (2-6) added to their lead in the fourth with an RBI double by Taylor Burger made it 3-0. Ellie Manriquez (Whittier, Calif./Ramona Convent) woud double for the Apps in the fourth but would be left standing at second base. Madeline Velasquez would pop up in the infield with no one taking control for the Apps and it would fall and the fourth run would score for the Bulldogs.

 

Haas homer in the seventh. Sydney Laws (2-4) was saddled wth the loss. She went 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Shivaun Landeros (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) came on in relief and pitched 2.2 innings allowing five hits and two earned runs. Sara Warnock paced ASU offensively, going 2-3.

 

 

In game two, the Chanticleers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Bri Chiusano led off with a single and promptly stole second base. Amanda Daneker knocked her in with an RBI double.

 

Kory Hayden and Morgan Noad each had an RBI apiece in the third inning, giving Coastal a 3-0 lead. Noad had a run-scoring single that made it 4-0 in the fourth; the Chanticleers broke it open with hour runs in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly, a bases-loaded walk, a hit batter aided outburst.

 

Alissa Schoelkopf (1-3) allowed 11 hits in five innings of work with six strikeouts. Landeros pitched a third of an inning in relief.

 

The Mountaineers will play their home opener Thursday against Syracuse from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
