The girls' high school soccer season may only be four games old, but the Watauga High girls' are off to a blistering start.
The Pioneers, led by Tori Derrick, Abby Carson and Sierra Hill paced WHS (3-0-1) to the Freedom Tournament championship Thursday night with a 6-0 blowout of West Caldwell in Morganton, N.C.
The Pioneers have erupted for 16 goals in their first four games, and Derrick leads the team with six tallies.
Derrick was at it again on Thursday night with a goal and an assist. She scored the only goal WHS needed at the 12-minute mark of the first half. Heather Byrd scored eight minutes later off a corner kick by Carson to make it 2-0, and Mia Austin's goal at the 26-minute mark gave WHS a 3-0 lead and the rout was on. Carson picked up her second assist of the day on that goal.
Carson finished with a goal and two assists---her penatly kick at the 49-minute mark of the second half make it 4-0. Hill had a goal and an assist, Kat Walsh had a goal and Samantha Critcher had an assist.
The Pioneers play their home opener Tuesday night against Forbush.

NORTHERN PACES WHS AT CEDAR ROCK
Watuaga High senior Austin Northern led the WHS boys' golf team to a second-place finish at the Cedar Rock Golf & Country Club in Lenior, N.C.
Northern became WHS' first medalist of the season as he paced the field with a one-over 37 on the par 36 course. The Pioneers finished second with a team score of 162; Hibriten, playing on its home course, won the four-team match with a team score of 161. Alexander Central finished third with a 171.
Austin Graham had a 41 for the Pioneers; Rory and Troy McNeil each fired a 42, Josh Farmer had a 46, Kyle Decker had a 49.
The Pioneers go back to Cedar Rock for a non-conference match Monday. That will be the only match on the schedule next week. The match scheduled for March 13 has been cancelled.

WHS TRACK RESCHEDULED....
Watauga High track coach Randy McDonough has announced that today's Twlight Meet in Winston-Salem, N.C., has been postponed. The Pioneers will travel to Winston-Salem for a Saturday Sunshine Meet beginning at 1 p.m.
