LMC Men's Tennis Fends Off Catawba, 6-3 PDF Print

The Lees-McRae men's tennis team completed the season sweep of Catawba with a solid performance in a 6-3 victory Wednesday afternoon in nonconference action in Salisbury, N.C.

 

The Bobcats (3-5) took care of business with wins at No. 1 – No. 4 singles while Scott Alford (Hillsborough, N.C.) snagged two more victories. The Indians (7-10) forced two bouts into the third set, but LMC proved too strong.

 

Taduez Poplawski (Asheville, N.C.) got the Bobcats off on the right foot with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Pierce Hoover.

 

Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) gutted out a win at No. 2 singles play after dropping the first set to fend off Matthew Nicholson, 6-7, 6-3, 11-9.

 

Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil) claimed a win at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 decision.

 

Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) cruised to a win against Iago Montero Nunez, 6-4, 6-0, in No. 4 singles action.

 

Alford handled Brad Smethurst, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 6 singles slot before teaming up with Garrett Lakey (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) to win at No. 3 singles, 8-3.

 

The Bobcats look for consecutive wins when they travel to Misenheimer, N.C. to take on Pfeiffer in Conference Carolinas play March 15 at 2 p.m.

 

 

Bobcats Fall at Catawba, 8-1

 

 

Lees-McRae sophomore Hillary Lutz continued her impressive play at No. 2 singles, but LMC dropped an 8-1 decision at Catawba in nonconference play Wednesday afternoon in Salisbury, N.C.

 

The Indians (9-9) reached the .500 mark by winning No. 3 and No. 5 singles play without dropping a game. The Bobcats (1-7) fell for the fourth consecutive match despite Lutz (Shelby, N.C.) earning back-to back wins.

 

Bobcat junior Samantha Wohlers (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) was unable to overcome a one-set deficit despite a valiant effort in the second set in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4.

 

Lutz grabbed the Bobcats' lone win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles.

 

LMC fell in both doubles bouts by identical 8-3 scores.

 

The Bobcats will enjoy a 10-day break before traveling to Misenheimer, N.C. to battle Pfeiffer in Conference Carolinas play at 2 p.m. March 15.
