The Watauga High girls' soccer team didn't waste any time putting Wilkes Central out its misery Tuesday night at the Freedom Tournament in Morganton, N.C.
The Pioneers erupted for three goals in the first five minutes of the game and downed the Eagles 3-0. Tori Derrick, who leads the Pioneers with a pair of goals in the early season, led the charge Tuesday night with a goal and an assist.
Kassandra Alvarez and Kat Welsh scored the other WHS goals. Brynne Gould and Tristin Derrick each had an assist. The Pioneers play McDowell tonight in Morganton at 7 p.m.
The WHS junior varsity team defeated Wilkes Central, 5-0.
WHS GOLF TIES FOR SECOND
The Watauga High boys' golf team finished in a second-place tie with Hickory on Tuesday in a non-conference match at Catawba Springs Golf Facility in Hickory, N.C.
The Pioneers and the Red Tornadoes both finished with a team score of 165, five shots behind St. Stephens, which won the match with a team score of 160.
Austin Harrill of Hickory was the leading medalist with an even-par 36. Austin Northern and Austin Graham of the Pioneers both fired a 39, three shots off the lead.
The Pioneers travel to Lenior, N.C., for a non-conference match at the Cedar Rock Golf & Country Club. The match that was scheduled to be played at Mimosa Country Club in Morganton, N.C. has been cancelled and will not be resheduled.
And with the schedule change, the Pioneers will have an open date on March 13.
