The Appalachian State University softball team made two costly errors on Sunday and lost to Eastern Illinios 1-0 in the championship game of the Charleston Southern Invitational.
Those miscues wasted a marvelous effort by losing pitcher Alissa Schoelkopf, who went the distance, giving up just one hit with nine strikeouts.
The Panthers scored the game's only run in the third. Hannah Cole walked with two outs and stole second base. She scored on consecutive errors by shortstop Cara Parker and catcher Sara Warnock.
The Apps (6-11) made three hits, but couldn't take advantage of three errors by the Panthers. The Mountaineers left six runners on base.
The Mountaineers travel to the Chanticleer Challenge in Conway, S.C., hosted by Coastal Carolina next Friday. Appalachian will open with Bryant at 10 a.m. and then play Jacksonville State at 12 p.m.
