Lees-McRae seniors Layana De Souza and Natalija Cakarevic were named to the Conference Carolinas 2013-2014 Academic Women’s Basketball All-Conference team, the conference office announced Thursday afternoon.

The league qualified sixteen male and twenty-six female athletes for the basketball academic team. Conference member institutions stress the role of "Academics and Athletics Working Together" and each sport’s Academic All-Conference award winners exemplify this continued league-wide commitment.

The 2013-2014 Conference Carolinas Basketball Academic All-Conference representatives have been awarded to the following junior, senior, and 5-year student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale in all work completed at their member institution that have played in a conference sponsored sport. The GPA is calculated based on the student-athletes cumulative average through the previous semester and each student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one academic year.

De Souza (Rio de Janerio, Brazil) sports a 3.85 GPA while majoring in business administration. Cakarevic (Belgrade, Serbia) maintains a 3.70 grade-point average while majoring in business with a concentration in finance marketing in international business. The senior has a minor in math.

“Both kids work hard in class,” praised head coach Michele Williams. “They are both great students and I’m proud of them.”

Each year the Academic All-Conference Team is released while closing out each regular season before starting the tournament championships. The men and women will begin tournament play Saturday, March 1st with quarterfinal games being played at the higher seeded team. The top four men’s and women’s teams will then travel to the Cabarrus County Arena and Events Center on March 5th and 6th for the Conference Carolinas Basketball Championship Tournament powered by OrthoCarolina.
