The San Francisco Giants, who were plagued by injuries last season, have named Madison Bumgarner their opening-day starter on March 31 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bumgarner, now in his fifth year with the Giants, was 13-9 last season with a 2.77 earned-run-averageHe made 31 appearances last season, all of them starts. He had 199 strikeouts in 201 1/3 innings of work. He gave up 62 walks, and he gave up
62 earned runs, including 15 home runs.
Bumgarner, who was born in Hickory, N.C., attended South Caldwell High School.
