The Appalachian State University womens' basketball bounced back from Saturday's disappointing loss at Georgia Southern to defeat Davidson 72-70 in overtime Monday night in a Southern Conference game.
The Mountaineers (12-15, 9-8 SoCon), who wiped out a ten point deficit in the second half that sent the game to overtime, also completed the season sweep against the Wildcats (13-14, 10-6). The win moves ASU into sole possession of fifth place in the SoCon standings.
Davidson owned an eight-point lead with 15:57 minutes left to play, but Appalchian came charging back with a 9-0 run and cut the lead to one point with 12:49 remaining. Following a Davidson time out, Maryah Sydnor put the Mountaineers on top as she scored, giving ASU a 47-46 lead.
From there, Appalachian struggled offensively as Davidson regained the lead, 53-47, with 7:58 to play. KeKe Cooper ended ASU's drought as she hit a free throw just 58 seconds later. But the Wildcats began to pull away, as they built a ten point lead.
But the Apps narrowed the gap to six with 3:52 left in the game. The Mountaineers followed that up by then scoring seven unanswered points in a one-minute span, cutting the lead to three twith 1:10 remaining in the game.
And Katie Mallow made the play of the night on Davidson's ensuing possession. She came up with a steal, found Sydnor, who proceeded to score and was fouled in the process. She completed the conventional three-point play, tying the game at 63 and forcing overtime.
Appalachian carried that momentum into the overtime period and jumped out to a 69-63 lead. Cooper scored four points in that run. But a three ball by Davidson's Laura Murray with 1:46 left in overtime cut Appalachian's lead to just two points.
IDavidson got the ball back with nine seconds left to play, but they failed to score and the Mountaineers hung on for the win.
