It took a while, four times as a matter of fact, but in the long run all that hard work finally paid off. Watauga High senior Demetre Kostis won the 132 pound championship Saturday night at the Class 4A State Wrestling Championships at the Greensboro Coliseum. Kostis decisioned Garrett Hinton

of Fayetteville-Jack Britt 2-1 to take the title. Kostis becomes WHS' first state champion since 2006, and the first place finisher for the Pioneers since 2008.

Demetre's older brother, Savva was among WHS' last place finishers when he finished second in '08. Demetre Kostis caps off a solid prep career with a 174-21 record, which includes a 56-1 record this season and a 106-3 record the last two years.

Appalachian State University and Gardner-Webb Univesity are among the schools that have expressed an interest in Kostis. Savva Kostis had a brilliant career at ASU under current coach and former WHS coach JohnMark Bentley. North Carolina State has invited Kostis for a recruiting visit. The Wolfpack extended their invitation after Kostis captured the state championship Saturday night.

In Class 2A, Michael Elliott of Ashe County won the championship at 152 pounds as he defeated Broady McGrath of Croatan 4-2 in the finals Saturday night.

In Class 1A, Ty Franklin of Avery won the state championship at 132 pounds as he defeated Breyer Owen of Rosman, 5-4; Ryan Sheppard of the Vikings finished second at 195 pounds. Spencer McCoy of Swain County pinned Sheppard in 4:36.

Team-wise, WHS finished in a three-way tie for 20th with New Bern and North Davidson with 23 points in Class 4A; Ashe County finished 28th with 23.5 points in Class 2A; Avery was eighth in Class 1A with 33 points.
