Demetre Kostis is just two wins away from winning the Class 4A state championship at 132 pounds. The Watauga High senior moved one step closer as he defeated Joe Mondragon of Wilmington-Ashley 9-3 Friday afternoon at the Class 4A State Wrestling Championships at the Greensboro Coliseum. Kostis will now face Kollin Wade (43-3) of Cary on Saturday in the state semifinals.




Wade, a sophomore, defeated Morris Andujar J.M. Robinson by forfeit before he defeated Tyler Gonzalez of Overhills 17-2 in Friday's quarterfinals. The Pioneers haven't had a place finisher since 2008, and a state champion since 2006.


Michael Elliott (34-2) of Ashe County advanced to the Class 2A state quarterfinals on Friday with an 8-1 win against Nathan Reitzel of Newton-Conover. Elliott defeated Gerald Watkins of Burlington-Cummings by tech fall, 20-3, in the opening round on Friday morning.


Shawn Baker (195 pounds) and Mitchell Brown (220) were both eliminated on Friday.


Baker (21-12) was pinned by Anthony Brogdon of South Granville in 2:53, and he was pinned by Charlie Bosshard of Hendersville in 2:44 in his first consolation match. Brown (22-14) was pinned by Tywon Bond of Holmes in 2:29 in his first-round match; Brown was eliminated as he lost to William Pressley of Barlett Yancey by pinfall in 1:51.


In Class 1A, Ty Franklin (49-2) of Avery advanced to the state semifinals in the 132 pound weight class as he knocked off Ricardo Gabriel of Manteo by major decision, 16-4 in his first-round, quarterfinal match. Ryan Sheppard (37-10) of the Vikings defeated Curtis Brown of Chatham Central 8-2 in his first-round match at 195 pounds.


Jeff Vick of South Davidson pinned Kyle Ward (19-21) in 25 seconds in their first-round, quarterfinal match at 220 pounds. Kaleb Taylor of Rosewood pinned Blake Johnson (26-21) of the Vikings in 3:46 in their first-round match in the heavyweight division.
