Kostis Advances To Quarterfinals PDF Print

Demetre Kostis is on a mission. The Watauga High senior is aiming his sights on a state championship, something the Pioneers haven't done since 2006 (Travis Coffey and Jacob Earp both won titles that year).

The Pioneers haven't had a state place finisher since 2008, when Earp and Savva Kostis (Demetre's older brother) both finished second, and Justin Hyatt finished third.

Well Kostis, a four-time state qualifier, who made a quick exit at the state tournament last year, marched his way into the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A State Wrestling Championships at the Greensboro Coliseum Thursday night with a lopsided win in his opening match.

He defeated David Losada (32-12) of Raleigh-Sanderson by major decision, 15-2, in the 132 pound weight division. Kostis, 171-21 in his career and 53-1 this season (he's 103-3 the last two years combined), will face junior Joe Mondragon (21-2) of Wilmington-Ashley in the quarterfinals today.

Mondragon advanced by knocking off Kyle Rogers (40-7) of High Point Central 4-2 in his first-round match.
