No.5 Mount Olive Sweeps Lenoir-Rhyne PDF Print

The Mount Olive Baseball Team (8-3), ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, swept a doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne (3-8), 7-2 and 6-1, Tuesday at Scarborough

Field. Both games were seven innings.

 

Game One - Mount Olive 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 2

 

The Trojans' Derek Justice (Unionville, Va.) (1-0) scattered four hits and gave up just two runs in going the distance in the victory.

 

Mount Olive's Zak Orrison (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) broke a two-all tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with the game-winning, two-run single as part of a three-run frame.

 

Chase Edwards (Auburn, Ala.) added three hits, two runs scored and a run batted in for Mount Olive in the win.

 

Senior outfielder Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) and freshman catcher Jordyn Cruz (Vero Beach, Fla.) each drove in a run while senior Austen Gunnels (Hitchcock, Texas) (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bears.

 

Game Two - Mount Olive 6, Lenoir-Rhyne 1

 

The Trojans took control early, crossing the plate four times in the first inning highlighted by Cody Britt's (Sims, N.C.) two-run single en route to the doubleheader sweep.

 

De'Andre Allen (Madisonville, Tenn.) added a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning to round out the scoring for Mount Olive.

 

On the mound, the Trojans' Brody McDonald (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) improved to 2-0 after picking the win while freshman John Curtis (Lenoir, N.C.) (0-2) took the loss for the Bears.

 

Junior designated hitter Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) drove in the lone run of the game for Lenoir-Rhyne with a bases-loaded walk in the third inning.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference action this Friday against Lincoln Memorial at Bears Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. Mount Olive, meanwhile, hosts California (Pa.) in a doubleheader this Saturday at noon.
