Watauga High senior Demetre Kostis was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Class 4A Western Regionals at Saturday at Cornelius-Hough High.


Kostis won all four of his matches at 132 pounds to qualify for the state tournament for the fourth year in a row. The two-time regional champion defeated Quintin Mikerson from West Charlotte 10-1 in the finals. Kostis, who was the top seed in his weight class, was the only Pioneer to qualify for the state meet. He opened the regional tournament by pinning Porter Ridge's Joseph Romaine just 39 seconds into the match.


Kostis added a win in the quarterfinals by beating Michael Ready of Lake Norman 11-2. Kostis added a semifinal victory over Morris Andujar of Concord Robinson with a pinfall at the 1:32 mark of the match.


Kostis is 52-1 this season; he's 170-21 in his career.


Kostis turns his attention to the state meet, which begins Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum. He reached the state tournament last year, but lost two straight matches after reaching the quarterfinals and was eliminated.


Five other Watauga wrestlers qualified for the regional. Mark Townsend finished 3-2 in the 120-pound weight class. Townsend, seeded third, pinned T.C. Roberson's Oliver Lierz in the opening round, but lost 3-0 to Kahil Miller from West Charlotte in the quarterfinals.


Townsend beat Jordan Markowski of Myers Park in the consolation bracket, and followed with a 9-7 win over Jace Kemper of South Caldwell in his next match. Townsend's day was over when he lost 9-2 to Tucker Key from Mooresville in the consolation semifinal.


Jacob Rutz finished with a 2-2 record in the 220-pound weight class. Rutz, seeded fifth, pinned Joseph Krajewski from Providence in the first period of the opening round.


Rutz lost to Clifton Pittman of Hopewell by pinfall in the quarterfinals, which sent Rutz to the consolation bracket.


He pinned Dean Looney of Matthews Butler, but lost 6-0 to top seeded Brian Tiderman from Charlotte Independence 6-0. Tiderman had a 46-1 record going into the tournament, but lost in the quarterfinals to eventual bracket champion Kevin Alanis of Alexander Central. Alanis was seeded 11th in the bracket.


Tiderman won the consolation bracket.


Watauga's Alex Wetmore and Jeremiah Wooldridge both finished 1-2 in their brackets.


Wooldridge, seeded 14th in the heavyweight division, lost his first match by pinfall to Connor Brooks of Hough. Wooldridge pined Russell Brown of Independence in the first round of the consolation bracket, but lost his next match.


Wetmore, wrestling in the 106-weight class, lost his first match by pinfall to Hopewell's Tyjuan Brown. Wetmore pinned Brennan Triplett of South Caldwell in the consolation round, but fell 14-12 to Brown in the next consolation round.


Watauga's Zach Tomer went 0-2 in the 138-pound class. He was pinned by Dustin Browne in the first round, and then after getting a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, was pinned by Kelvin O'Brien of Hough.
