The Appalachian State University women's basketball team led by Maryah Sydnor's 21 points and 12 rebounds knocked off Elon 71-60 Monday night at
the Holmes Center. The Mountaineers (11-14, 8-7 SoCon) had four players in double figures. KeKe
Cooper poured in 16 points with eight rebounds; Bria Huffman finished with 14 points. The Mountaineers, who shot 47.2 percent (17-36) from the floor in the first half, led the Phoenix 40-29 at the intermission.
The second half began much the same as the Apps continued to lead 48-35 with 16:34 to play. But Elon (12-13; 8-6) went on a run of its own and scored the next seven points, including a deep three from Zora Stephenson, cutting the lead to six points.
Less than one minute later, Stephenson hit another three and Elon eventually cut the lead to two points at 49-47. But the Apps scored the next five points and stretched it lead out to 54-47.
Elon kept it close, thanks to a three ball by Stephenson that made it 56-51 with 8:36 left to play. But Appalachian derailed Elon's rally as the Mountaineers went on an 11-3 run to take a commanding 67-58 lead with 2:17 remaining.
Katie Mallow of the Mountaineers finished with ten points; Jessica Barrios, who made her third consecutive start, dished out six assists. The Mountaineers shot 41.2 percent in the win, while grabbing 48 rebounds and committing 16 turnovers.
Elon was led by Stephenson and Lauren Brown, who each notched 14 points apiece. Kelsey Harris had nine rebounds for the Phoenix.
The Phoenix recorded a 36.5 field goal percentage, finding 39 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
The Apps travel to Statesboro, Ga. to play Georgia Southern Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
