Lenoir-Rhyne (3-6, 1-4) and Wingate (6-2, 3-2) split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader in baseball Sunday afternoon at Bears Field. The Bulldogs came from behind to win the first contest by a 4-3 score before the Bears took the nightcap, 4-1.
Game One - Wingate 4, Lenoir-Rhyne 3
The Bulldogs' Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) hit the game-winning, RBI triple as part of a three-run sixth inning as Wingate rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take the first contest of the day.
Brad Cherry (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) led the way for Wingate with three hits and two runs batted in while Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) earned the win on the mound.
Little improved to 2-0 on the season after holding Lenoir-Rhyne scoreless for three and one-third innings of work to go along with three strikeouts.
L-R jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play behind run-scoring singles from sophomore shortstop Matthew De La Rosa (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior outfielder Brandon Walker (Otisville, N.Y.).
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Ivan Vieitez (Miami, Fla.) fell to 0-2 after suffering the loss. The Bears were led offensively by junior second baseman Brantley Rumford (Rock Hill, S.C.) with three hits and two RBI.
Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 4, Wingate 1
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Jeremy Coburn (Louisburg, N.C.) earned the complete game victory while Walker delivered the game-winning, two-run single in the bottom of the third inning as the Bears salvaged the split with the win in the night cap.
Coburn improved to 2-1 on the season after limiting Wingate to just one unearned run to go along with seven strikeouts. The win in the second game today also snapped the Bears' five-game losing streak.
For Wingate, Billings drove in the lone run in the second inning for the Bulldogs while T.J. Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) (0-1) suffered the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Mount Olive, N.C., to face sixth-ranked Mount Olive on Tuesday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. Wingate plays Belmont Abbey on the road on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., as well.
