|Mountaineers Tame the Wildcats|

The Appalachian State wrestling team picked up its second commanding win in a row with a 35-7 rout of the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday at Varsity Gym.
The Mountaineers started the match winning three in a row before losing one, then winning three more in a row. The Mountaineers only dropped two matches on the night, picking up two forfeits, a tech-fall, a pin and four decisions.
Javon Johnson (Holly Springs, N.C./ Holly Springs) picked up his first collegiate win beating James McCord with a 6-3 decision at the 141-pound weight class and Dylan Cottrell (Spencer, W.Va./Roane County) got his 11th-straight win gaining a 10-7 decision against Kevin Birmingham. Cottrell has now moved to 22-1 on the season and is still ranked seventh in the 149-pound weight class by AWN in last week’s poll.
Aaron Scott (Ashe County/Ashe County) was faced with gaining the early momentum for the Mountaineers at the 157-pound weight class. He picked up the team’s first win of the night with a 6-2 win against Dan Hagemann. App State took the early 3-0 lead.
Next up was the most dominating match of the night. Zack Strickland (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) got the Mountaineers six points by receiving a full-match tech-fall, not giving up a single point. He got the first takedown of the match and continued to tilt his opponent, picking up near-fall after near-fall. He received the 15-0 win by earning the one-point riding time at the end of the match.
Getting his second-straight start at the 197-pound weight class, Tyler Radford (Marion, N.C./McDowell) put together an impressive performance by earning the 5-1 decision against Michael Moore.
Denzel Dejournette (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) started his match off strong gaining the first takedown. After, he forced his opponent into a cradle and pinned him (4:43) picking up six more points for the Apps.
Dominic Parisi (Concord, N.C./Jay M. Robinson) and Colin Hedash (Slatington, Pa./ Lehigh) both picked up forfeits in the 125 and 174 -pound weight classes, respectively.
The Mountaineers dropped the 133 and 184-pound weight classes. Nick Vetell (Trinity, N.C./Trinity) dropped his match with a 9-3 decision and Vito Pasone (Wilkes-Barre/E.L.Meyers) , facing a larger opponent at 133, dropped the 18-9 major decision.
The Mountaineers got the 35-7 win. This is Appalachian’s second dual match in a row in which they only gave up seven points. . They move to 29-1 against Davidson dating back to 1990.
Appalachian will be back on the mat Feb. 23 against SIUE in Varsity Gym at 2 p.m. in its last home match of the season. The team will be honoring its graduating seniors for the hard work and dedication that have been given to the team over the years.
