Wayne Smith, who played at Appalachian State University, has re-signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Smith, who graduated from ASU in 2002, will begin his 11th season in the CFL.
He was selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the first round of the CFL Draft in 2004. Smith has played in 132 games over the course of 11 CFL seasons, winning two Grey Cup championships (Saskatchewan in 2007, Toronto in 2012). In 2013, he dressed in 16 regular season games with four starts at left guard for Toronto. He was named a CFL All-Star in 2008.
A two-time member of the Tiger-Cats (2004-06 and in 2011), Smith has also played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2007-10) and is currently with the Argos (2012-13). Smith was also a practice squad player with the Washington Redskins (2002) and the Denver Broncos (2003) of the National Football League.
Smith helped ASU to a share of the Southern Conference championship in 1999. The Mountaineers, who knocked off No.1 Georgia Southern at home that year, shared the league championship with the Eagles and Furman.
That 1999 team made it to the Division I-AA (now the FCS) national semifinals, but lost to Montana in overtime.
