The Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team (3-1) swept Mercyhurst (0-4), 11-0 and 7-1, Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at Bears Field.

Game One - Lenoir-Rhyne 11, Mercyhurst 0 (five innings)

L-R junior outfielder Brittany Coursen (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman outfielder Dakota Keller (Mooresboro, N.C.) each hit a three-run home run as the Bears run-ruled the Lakers in five innings.

L-R sophomore Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) (1-1) earned her first win on the year after throwing a one-hit shutout to go along with six strikeouts. Megan Smith (Hamburg, N.Y.) (0-1) took the setback for the Lakers.

Coursen's home run opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning while Keller finished with three hits and five runs batted in for the Bears in the victory.

Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 7, Mercyhurst 1

Coursen continued her hot hitting with a two-run double while freshman first baseman Sydney Landreth (Disputanta, Va.) and freshman catcher Sarah Kenley (Charlotte, N.C.) also drove in a pair of runs each as the Bears completed the sweep of the Lakers.

Coursen's double was part of a three-run fourth inning which pushed the Bears' advantage to 5-0 and help break the contest open.

Senior shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) added two hits and three runs scored while sophomore Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) improved to 2-0 with the win for the Bears.

Hole allowed just one run to go along with five strikeouts in going the distance while Mercyhurst's Annie Truelove (Columbus, Ohio) (1-1) suffered the loss. The Lakers' Smith drove in the team's only run of the contest in the sixth inning.

Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home on Wednesday when it hosts Belmont Abbey in a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. Mercyhurst next faces Kutztown (Noon) and East Stroudsburg (2:00 p.m.) on Friday, February 21, in the Pioneer Classic in Greeneville, Tenn.
