The Appalachian State University softball team closed out a tough weekend at the Kajikawa Classic with a 12-2 loss to Oregon State. The game was called after six innings because of the ten-run mercy rule.




Dani Gilmore got things started for Oregon State as she led off the game with a home run for an early 1-0 lead.


The Beavers broke it open by scoring four runs in the top of the third. Oregon State belted four doubles in the inning, and coupled with two Mountaineer errors, the Beavers took a commanding 5-0 lead.


A two-run double by Kori Nishitomi in the fourth gave Oregon State a 7-0 cushion.


The Mountaineers (0-6), who left the bases loaded in the second inning, finally got on the board as they scored twice in the bottom of the fourth.


Alicia Van Winkle led off the inning with a single followed by a Ellie Manriquez double. Van Winkle was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play. However, Cara Parker scorched a double to score Manriquez for the first run of the game. Pinch-runner Kristen Terry (Kernersville, N.C./Glenn) advanced to third on an error; pinch-hitter Alex Sohl (Paducah, Ky./Lone Oak) drove in App State's second run with a sacrifice fly.


Leading 7-2, the Beavers applied the finishing touch by scoring five times in the bottom of the sixth. A two-run double by Christie Langlois closed it out for the Beavers.


Shivaun Landeros suffered the loss. She went 5.2 innings allowing 10 hits and 12 runs with eight of them earned. Landeros also struck out two on the day. Alissa Schoelkopf (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) pitched one third of an inning in relief.


Manriquez led the Apps with two hits in three trips with a run scored. Dani Heichen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter), Cynthia Gomez, Sarah Warnock (Jamestown, N.C./Southwest Guilford), Van Winkle and Parker all picked up base hits in the loss.


The Mountaineers travel to Spartanburg, S.C. for the Buffalo Wild Wings Spartan Invitational. App State will play Presbyterian next Friday with first pitch slated for 5 p.m.
