Tusculum Sweeps Lenoir-Rhyne

 

The Tusculum Baseball Team (4-2, 3-0) swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne (2-5, 0-3), 4-3 and 7-3, Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Game One - Tusculum 4, Lenoir-Rhyne 3

The Pioneers rallied from a 3-2 deficit with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to take the win in game one of the doubleheader.

 

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Tusculum's Jalen Shuffler (Greeneville, Tenn.) came through with the walk-off RBI double as Pat Holleran (Peabody, Mass.) crossed the plate in the victory for the Pioneers.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne took the lead with a three-run seventh inning highlighted by freshman pinch hitter Jordyn Cruz's (Vero Beach, Fla.) two-run double. L-R senior outfielder Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) added a run-scoring single in the frame.

 

Shuffler finished with three runs batted in while Tusculum's John-Austin Shepard (Haymarket, Va.) improved to 1-1 after earning the victory. Shepard pitched two and one-third innings of scoreless baseball while striking out four batters. L-R junior Nick Flachofsky (Pfafftown, N.C.) (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

 

 

Game Two - Tusculum 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 3

Tusculum's Heath Comerford (Athens, Tenn.) and Scott Gibson (Erwin, Tenn.) each hit home runs to lead the Pioneers in the sweep of the Bears. Comerford's home run, a two-run shot, opened the scoring in the first inning of the nightcap.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman shortstop Matthew De La Rosa (Austin, Texas) and freshman first baseman David Newcomer (Archdale, N.C.) each drove in a run in the losing effort.

 

On the mound, Tusculum's T.J. Miller (Waxhaw, N.C.) (1-0) allowed just two runs over six innings of work to earn the win while L-R freshman John Curtis (Lenoir, N.C.) (0-1) took the loss.

 

 

Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., while Tusculum plays Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday beginning at 4:00 p.m.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne Track And Field Competes At The Mountaineer Indoor Open

 

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Teams wrapped up competition Saturday at the Mountaineer Open at the Holmes Convocation Center.

 

L-R sophomore Kevin Baxter (Columbia, S.C.), a 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor All-American, finished first in the men's 55-meter hurdles and tied his own school record with a time of 7.43 seconds.

 

Including a pair of men's 60-meter hurdle events, Baxter has won three times in three races so far this indoor season.

 

In the women's weight throw, freshman Domonique Jones (Greensboro, Ga.) finished second among non-Division I competitors with a school-record toss of 46'7".

 

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Zach Millsaps (Statesville, N.C.) was the top runner in the men's one mile among non-Division I competition with a time of 4:33 while redshirt freshman Grace Turner (Lincolnton, N.C.) was runner-up in the women's 3,000-meter run (10:53) for the Bears.

 

Finally, sophomore Vertrice Wilson (Carrollton, Ga.) was second in the women's 55-meter hurdles (8.70 seconds) among non-NCAA Division I runners.

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams next compete in the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track on Friday, February 14, and Saturday, February 15, in Winston-Salem, N.C.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team Sweeps Converse, 9-0

 

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team (3-2) swept Converse (0-1), 9-0, Saturday afternoon at the Converse Tennis Complex.

 

Four L-R women's tennis players: seniors Nateesha Hurtt (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Lacey Lapp (Maitland, Fla.) and juniors Maggie Brown (Cranford, N.J.) and Zorica Djuric (Belgrade, Serbia) all won at singles and doubles.

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team next faces Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday, February 15, at 1:30 p.m.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne's next home match takes place on Saturday, February 22, against Lees-McRae at 2:00 p.m., at Hickory High School.
