Game One: San Diego State 7, App State 6
After a scoreless first inning, the Mountaineers were able to get on the board in the top of the second inning. Sarah Warnock (Jamestown, N.C./Southwest Guilford) drove in the first run of the season for the Apps through the left side to drive in Cara Parker (Lake Park, Ga./Lowndes) and make the score 1-0 in favor of App State.
The Aztecs were able to tie in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single to centerfield off the bat of Sydnee Cable to drive in Stefanie Polonia. In the top of the fourth, the Mountaineers put together their highest scoring inning. After a Pepper Butler (Delray Beach, Fla./Boca Rotan Community) single and bunt single from Dani Heichen (Pembroke Pines, Fla/Pembroke Pines Charter), two batters later later Ashley Seering (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) hit a bomb to left center field to give the Mountaineers a 4-1 advantage heading into the bottom half of the fourth.
San Diego State picked up one run in the bottom of the fourth off of a Cable double to drive in Jacki Campa to bring the score to 4-2. Neither team would score again until the sixth inning. In the top half of the inning, Butler and Heichen would find themselves on second and third. Lindsay Loudermilk (Bluff City, Tenn./Sullivan East) and Seering would provide back-to-back singles to extend the Mountaineer lead to 6-2. The Aztecs would tack on one when Monica Downey singled up the middle to drive in Kayla Bufardeci to bring the App lead to 6-3.
The Aztecs would score three in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 6-6 and force extras. San Diego State would pick up a single, a double and a two-run home run from Bufardeci in the inning. The Mountaineers were not able to do any damage in the top half of the eighth inning and San Diego State would tally the winning run by way of a Hayley Miles single to drive in Kayla Jordan.
Alissa Schoelkopf (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) received the start for the Apps and pitched seven innings, scattering eight hits and allowing six runs with four strikeouts. Shivaun Landeros (Sparks, Nev./Edward C. Reed) (0-1) suffered the loss after pitching the eighth innin and surrendering a hit, a walk and an unearned run.
Seering finished 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, including her three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. Warnock and Loudermilk drove in one run each for the Mountaineers. Heichen led Appalachian with a team-high three hits in four at-bats. The Mountaineers would out hit the Aztecs, 12-9 in the contest.
Weather related travel delays for Western Michigan pushed Thursdays second game to a 10:30 p.m. start time. Results for that game will be posted once they become available.
