The Appalachian State University women's basketball continued its torrid pace by knocking off Furman 75-70 at the Holmes Center Monday night. The win moves App State into a third-place tie with the Paladins in the Southern Conference standings.
The Mountaineers (9-12, 6-5 SoCon) had four players in double figures. KeKe Cooper led App State with 16 points; Maryah Sydnor pitched in with 14 points and ten rebounds. Bria Huffman had 15 points.
The Paladins (12-10, 6-5 SoCon) led by six early in the first half. Leading 16-10, the Mountainneers went on a 10-0 run to take a 20-16 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. App State held serve and was up 34-31 halftime.
The Apps gradually pulled away in the second half. Katie Mallow hit a lay up to put Appalachian up by seven at 50-43. But Furma chipped away and trailed 58-56 with 8:02 left to play.
The lead was whittled down to a point game with 2:27 left at 67-66, but the Mountaineers iced it away with six free throws down the stretch. The Mountaineers shot 42.9 percent from the floor with 42 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
Brittany Hodges led Furman with a game-high 20 points and 14 rebounds. Holli Wilkin of the Paladins had 17 points; Whitney Bunn poured in 11 points; Sarah Durdaller had ten points and nine rebounds. Furman shot 38.2 percent, notching 44 rebounds with 15 turnovers.
Appalachian travels to Chattanooga Saturday, February 8, to play the Mocs in a 2 p.m. game. Chattanooga currently leads the SoCon standings with an 11-0 record. Coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. on Classic Hits 100.7 FM.
