The Watauga High boy's and girl's swimming teams wrapped up their respective seasons on Saturday at the Class 4A Western Regional championships in Huntersville, N.C.

Anne Taylor was WHS' only representative in the girl's regional. She turned in a pair of top-20 finishes. Taylor was 17th in the 50-meter freestyle in 26.13 seconds; she was 19th in the 100-meter butterfly (1:04.34).

Charlotte Catholic won the regional championship with a team score of 506; Cornelius-Hough finished nearly 100 points behind with a team score of 408. Providence finished third.

The WHS boys were led by their relay teams. WHS finished 13th in both the 200-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter freestyle relay. Reed Conner, Joel Brown, Nick Woody and Ben Watson paced both teams. The 200 relay crossed the finish line in 1:40.30; the 400 relay finished in 3:42.

Conner had the best individual finish for the boys. He was 16th in the 100 freestyle (52.93). Woody had a 19th-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:03.41) and he was 21st in the 200 freestyle 1:59.21.

Corneilus-Hough won the regional title by besting the field with 361.5 points. South Mecklenburg came in second place with a team score of 357; Ardrey Kell was third. WHS was 17th with 17 points.

"I thought we had some strong swims for our team," said WHS coach David Gragg. "It was a good finish to our season, due to injuries, we had to scratch all the relays for the girls. With the season over, we will regroup and look toward next year."

The state championships will be held in Cary, N.C., this weekend.
