The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team was voted on by the league coaches to win the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship.

The Bears, who finished 37-16 last season and won their fourth straight league tournament title, received seven of the 12 first-place votes for a total of 127 points.

Lenoir-Rhyne is coming off a berth in the regional finals last spring and has won eight league championships in school history, all since the 2000 season.

In addition, four Bears earned all-league preseason accolades including first-teamer Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.).

Hoskins, a sophomore pitcher, was named to the 2013 All-SAC First Team after finishing with a record of 17-8 to go along with a 1.79 earned run average, 10 shutouts and 164 strikeouts.

Senior third baseman Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.), senior outfielder Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) and sophomore pitcher Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) were all named to the all-league preseason second team for the Bears.

Jarman, a three-time All-SAC honoree (2011-13), led the Bears in hits (55), runs scored (33), slugging percentage (.554), triples (five) and total bases (92) last season to go along with a .331 batting average and 27 runs batted in.

Mizelle hit a team-best eight home runs last season with 18 runs batted in while Hole fashioned a 19-8 record in addition to a 2.05 earned run average, five shutouts and 100 strikeouts.

Lenoir-Rhyne opens the 2014 season on Saturday, February 8, against Mount Olive in a doubleheader at Bears Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
