Appalachian State University women's tennis fell to ETSU on Sunday by a final of 4-1 at the Bristol Racquet and Fitness Club as it closed out its opening weekend of play.

The Mountaineers (0-2) picked up wins by walkover at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, but fell in the two remaining doubles matches to surrender the doubles point to the Buccaneers (1-1) before dropping decisions at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

McKayla Zupan earned Appalachian's lone point on the day as she picked up a walkover win at the No. 6 spot while Clare Cox trailed at No. 1 (3-6, 6-2, 5-2) and Jessica Thaggard trailed at No. 5 (6-1, 5-0) in matches that went unfinished.

Cox was also part of the No. 3 doubles tandem with Megan Mullen that won in a walkover against the Buccaneers, who did not field at No. 3 doubles pairing or a No. 6 singles player.

At the No. 2 singles spot, Gabreille Wreder suffered a straight-set loss (6-0, 6-0) while Mackenzie LaSure also lost in straight sets at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1). Briana Armellino was Appalachian's most competitive singles player, but suffered a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 loss at No. 4 singles.

In action at No. 1 doubles, the duo of LaSure/Olivia Isbey suffered a 6-0 loss while Armellino/Wreder dropped a 6-0 match at No. 2.

The Mountaineers open the home portion of their schedule when they take on UNC Asheville on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
