Watuaga High senior Jacob Soule of the indoor track team qualified for the state meet Saturday with a 17th-place finish in the boy's 3,200-meter run at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Soule finished the race in 10:02.57. William Roberson of Raleigh-Broughton won the race in 9:25.10. He nosed out Andrew Hunter, who ran unattached, by .21 seconds.
Michael Holland of the Pioneers was 36th in 10:32.73. Soule was also WHS' only top 20 finisher in the boy's meet.
Zach Styron was 23rd in the boy's 55-meter hurdles (8.71 seconds); Matthew Hellenbrand was 38th in the boy's 1,000-meter run (2:51.60); Conner Pate was 53rd (2:35.56) in the 1,000.
Alison Seramur had the best showing of the day for the Pioneers as she finished sixth in the girl's pole vault with an effort of 9-feet-6 inches. Zoe Early, who was unattached, won the event as she cleared the bar with an effort of 11-0. Mariel Finger of North Gaston finished second with a jump of 10-6.
Savanna Randle placed in two events for the WHS girls. She was 38th in the 55-meter dash (7.76) and she was 66th in the girl's 300 (47.31).
The Pioneers will compete in a polar meet today at North Stokes. The state finals will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem on Saturday, February 8.
