Appalachian State University wrestling traveled to The Citadel for Southern Conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers fell to the Bulldogs, 25-9.


The Apps earned three wins on the day at 149 pounds and 174 pounds and at heavyweight. The Mountaineers ninth ranked wrestler in the country at 149, Dylan Cottrell (Spencer, W.Va./Roane County), earned the first team points of the day for Appalachian. Cottrell defeated Matthew Frisch by a 5-3 decision. The decision put the Apps down by 10, 13-3.


With the win, the Spencer, W.Va. native earned his 20th victory of the season and improves to 20-1 on the season. The redshirt-freshman is also 9-0 in dual matches this season, including a 2-0 mark within the Southern Conference.


Colin Hedash (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) earned the second win on the day for App State. Hedash wrestled Terrell Forbes to a 2-0 decision to make the score 19-6 in favor of the Bulldogs. Hedash’s victory was his 14th of the season, which puts him second on the team behind Cottrell.


In the heavyweight bout, redshirt-freshman Denzel Dejournette (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) defeated Joseph Bexley by decision 2-1 for his 12th victory of the season.


The Mountaineers move to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in SoCon action. The Apps will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they host the Duke Blue Devils at Varsity Gym. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
