Blowing Rock, N.C., resident and ZAP Fitness Foundation runner, Tyler Pennel, finished fourth on Sunday at the U.S. Championship 1/2 Marathon in Houston, TX. Pennel completed the race in the time of 1:01:44.
As a result of that fourth-place finish, Pennel has been named to the USA World 1/2 Marathon Team that will compete in Copenhagen, Denmark, in March. ZAP teammate Cole Atkins was 29th on Sunday and finished the race in 1:04.37.
In turn, both Pennel and Atkins have now qualified for the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials as well. A sub 1:05 in a half marathon qualifies a runner for the olympic marathon trials.
"Tyler ran an excellent race from gun to tape," said ZAP Head Coach Pete Rea. "He kept the tempo quick in the middle when the pack slowed, and he closed well to grab a spot to Worlds."
