Arkansas State University football player Markel Owens was shot and killed Wednesday night during a home invasion robbery, according to the Jackson, TN., Police Department has confirmed.

Owens, 21, was killed in his hometown of Jackson, Tenn., Wednesday night along with his stepfather, Johnny Shivers, 36.

Police found Owens, a defensive lineman for the Red Wolves, and Shivers inside their home with gunshot wounds. Owens' mother, who was discovered in the front yard of their home with a gun shot wound, was treated and released from the hospital.

Investigators have learned Shivers was returning home when he was rushed by two masked men, who demanded money. Owens and his mother were in their apartment at the time of the attack. A struggle ensued, and Owens, who joined in the struggle with Shivers, were both shot.

Owens began playing for Arkansas State in 2010, when he redshirted and played on the scout team. He recently competed in the GoDaddy Bowl in which Arkansas State defeated Ball State 20-23. Owens made four tackles in 2013.
