HARWOOD JOINS MOUNTAINEERS:

Katon Harwood, a right-handed pitcher from Asheville, N.C., joined Appalachian State University’s baseball program at the beginning of the spring semester on Monday.

Harwood graduated from T.C. Roberson H.S. a semester early and chose to forego his final season of high-school ball and enroll at Appalachian State. He is eligible to participate as a true freshman for the Mountaineers in 2014.

Perfect Game USA ranks Harwood as North Carolina’s No. 7 RHP and No. 14 overall player in the class of 2014. The right-hander compiled an 11-7 record and 2.67 ERA over his final two seasons at T.C. Roberson. He struck out 98 in just 89.2 innings of work and was named the top performer at the 2013 National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C. after throwing a one-hit shutout versus national power Florida Christian.

Harwood and the Mountaineers open the 2014 campaign in less than a month with a three-game series at Arkansas (Feb. 14-16).

APPALACHIAN TO HOST CAMPBELL IN WINSTON-SALEM:

Appalachian State head coach Billy Jones has announced that the Mountaineers will host their March 5 game versus Campbell at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem.

Located on the western edge of downtown Winston-Salem off Business I-40, BB&T Ballpark is the home of the Carolina League’s Winston-Salem Dash (high Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox). The state-of-the-art stadium opened in 2010 and was named the Ballpark of the Year by baseballparks.com.

The March 5 contest versus Campbell, which posted a 49-10 record a year ago and won the Big South Conference championship, marks Appalachian State’s first-ever appearance at BB&T Ballpark.

“We’re excited and grateful to be able to play at BB&T Ballpark against a very good Campbell club on March 5,” Jones said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to not only be able to bring our team to the Triad, where Appalachian always enjoys terrific support, but also for our players to be able to play in one of the best pro ballparks in the region.”

First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets cost just $10 apiece and will be available in advance at appstatesports.com and at the gate.
