It's official, Tom Brown Sr., has been named the new football coach at East Burke High. He becomes the eighth head football coach in school history at East Burke, replacing Jim Ruark. Ruark resigned after last season, when the Cavs went 2-9, and after four seasons as head coach.

Brown has won 352 games in his career, and next fall will be his 40th on the sidelines. Thirty-five of those years were at Maiden (1966-1978, 1986-2007).

Matt Beam, a graduate of Appalachian State University, has been named the new football coach at Newton-Conover. Beam replaces Brint Russell, who resigned on Nov. 14, 2013.

Beam becomes just the fourth head football coach at N-CHS in the past 40 years, joining Don Patrick, Nick Bazzle and Russell.

The Red Devils were 2-9 this past season after sharing a piece of the final Catawba Valley 2A title in 2012 with a 9-5 record.

Beam is 81-37 during his nine-year stint as a head coach and none of his teams have ever missed the state playoffs. He spent the last six years at Lawndale-Burns.
