Matt Beam will be named the new football coach at Newton-Conover High. He would succeed Brint Russell, who resigned after two seasons, as the next head football coach at Newton-Conover.

Beam, who has coached at Lawndale-Burns since 2009, would become the Red Devils fourth coach in 40 years. Russell was 9-4 in his season, but Newton-Conover slipped to 2-9 overall and seventh (1-6) in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Conference. When he resigned, Russell said he would remain on the Newton-Conover faculty until June.

Beam was previously an assistant coach at East Lincoln and South Mecklenburg before he became head coach at North Lincoln from 2005-2008, Beam went 30-20 at North Lincoln. He took over at Lawndale-Burns in 2009.

Burns is 51-17 and has finished at least second in its league, won three straight South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A titles from 2010 through 2012 (going 34-8) and at one point had a 24-game conference win streak. Their 2011 team (13-2) reached the state 3A semifinals, losing 33-7 at home to West Rowan after having beaten Waynesville Tuscola, Hickory and previously unbeaten Franklin in the first three rounds.

All nine of Beam’s teams have reached the state playoffs.
