Trailing 28-21 at half, the Lees-McRae women's basketball team rode an electric second half to secure a 57-53 victory against Conference Carolina foe Pfeiffer Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in
Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (6-8, 3-2 CC) picked up their second consecutive victory and overcame a sluggish first half after shooting 29.6%. The Falcons (2-11, 1-4 CC) saw their early season woes continue despite knocking down eight three-pointers.
The first half was a see-saw battle, but LMC grabbed an early four-point advantage following a fastbreak layup from Icey Patterson (Seneca, S.C.), 17-13 with 5:22 remaining in the half.
The Falcons stormed back and carried momentum into the half when they finished the first period on a 15-4 run. Pfeiffer's Alexis Stallard helped jumpstart the offense while rattling off seven points during the run.
Both teams struggled in the first 20 minutes while knocking down eight field goals apiece.
The Falcons stretched the lead to nine, 30-21, following a pair of free-throws from Vivian Doerr.
However, Patterson struck again and teammate Kasey Hanes (Mooresville, N.C.) capped off a 12-4 run to give the Bobcats a one-point lead, 35-34, with 14:16 the clock.
The game saw multiple ties the rest of the way, but a pair of Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) converted free-throws at the 3:11 and Alyssa Munson (Summerfield, N.C.) followed with a layup and gave LMC a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Senior Lauren Lewis (Concord, N.C.) paced the team with 14 points while Belcher chipped in with 13. Munson and Belcher grabbed five boards a piece while the Bobcats shot 11-of-13 from the charity stripe and 50% from the field in the second half.
Stallard led all scorers with 18 points while Carter Williams had 12. Amy Stellar grabbed eight boards and the Falcons had 25 turnovers.
The Bobcats continue their home-friendly January when they welcome Conference Carolina's Barton to Williams Gymnasium Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
