ASU Women Dismiss Samford PDF Print

Appalachian State women's basketball found a win for the second-straight game on Saturday, downing Samford with a score of 61-47 in the Holmes Center.

 

 

Fueled by Maryah Sydnor's 24 points, Appalachian (5-9, 2-2 SoCon) was able to find a win against the Bulldogs (3-13, 1-4) and tally its second Southern Conference win of the season.

 

Scoring would be an issue for App State in the beginning of the first half as Samford led 6-2 with 15:37 left. The Mountaineers would finally gain the lead with a lay up from Bria Huffman to make the score 10-8 and from there the Apps would take control.

 

As the Mountaineers attempted to lengthen their lead, the Bulldogs would find a way to score, never falling behind by more than six points and coming within three with 3:16 left in the half. The Mountaineers would go on a 7-2 run at the end of the first half to lead Samford 27-19.

 

Sydnor led the Mountaineers at the half, scoring ten points. The Apps shot 40 percent (10-25) from the floor in the first half, while Samford recorded a 35 percent (7-20) field goal percentage.

 

The Mountaineers started the second half strong, scoring the first two points, but the Bulldogs remained composed, hitting a jumper and three from Hannah Nichols in the first three minutes.

 

Samford would pull within six points with 14:53 to play, but Farrahn Wood responded with a three-pointer to put the Apps back up by nine points.

 

The Bulldogs would not close the lead to more than eight points for the rest of the game, as Sydnor led App State, scoring 12 points in the last ten minutes of play. The Mountaineers would take the game with a final score of 61-47.

 

Sydnor finished with 24 points and six rebounds, while Huffman notched 11 points and five assists on the game.

 

Joi Jones and Katie Mallow each recorded eight points in the win, with Jones dishing out four assists and finding five steals. Mia Marshall and KeKe Cooper led the team on the boards, each grabbing seven rebounds.

 

The Mountaineers finished with a 45.7 percent (21-46) field goal percentage, while finding 38 rebounds and turning the ball over 18 times.

 

Hannah Nichols led Samford in scoring and rebounds, tallying 13 points and seven boards. Ellen Riggins followed with 12 points and six rebounds.

 

The Bulldogs shot 38.3 percent (18-47) from the floor in the loss, grabbing 27 rebounds, making  21 turnovers.

 

Appalachian will return to action on Monday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. when they take on SoCon foe Chattanooga in the Holmes Center.
