One thing is for sure, the Watauga High wrestling team isn't a pushover anymore. Just ask Freedom.

The Patriots escaped with a 37-36 victory Wednesday night in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener for both teams at Lentz-Eggers Gym.

The Pioneers, who captured six match victories on the night, posted five pinfalls. Mark Townsend (at 120 pounds), Demetre Kostis (132), Jeremy Critcher (195), Jacob Rutz (220) and heavyweight Jeremiah Wooldridge all won by pinfalls.

Critcher, Rutz and Wooldridge staged a late rally as the Pioneers nearly wiped out a 19-point deficit. WHS travels to Hibriten Friday night.
